Many times we use Heaven to get people to accept Jesus. And, yes, Heaven is a reward for following Jesus, but the Bible also says we should count the cost to follow Him before making this decision. Luke 14:28-30 says, “For which of you, wanting to build a tower, doesn’t first sit down and calculate the cost to see if he has enough to complete it? Otherwise, after he has laid the foundation and cannot finish it, all the onlookers will begin to make fun of him, saying, ‘This man started to build and wasn’t able to finish.”
Living for Jesus is not always easy. Yes, there are so many blessings that come with surrendering your life to Christ, but many Christians become the seeds that fell on rocky ground, where there wasn’t much soil, and they sprang up quickly since the soil wasn’t deep. But when the sun came up they were scorched, and since they had no root, they withered (Matthew 13:5-6, 20-21). The cost was to high for these seeds or people. They were enjoying the benefits of a Christian life, but not the sacrifices and persecution.
That is why we must count the cost and seek the Giver and not the gift. If we seek the Giver, we are promised that everything else will be taken care of (Matthew 6:33).
